The employee in this position reports to the Supervisor of Communications in the Substation Engineering Unit. The Associate Electrical Engineer works on long term projects involving the planning and development of Telecommunications systems for Command and Control of the operation of electric power systems for the generation, transmission, distribution, conversion, measurement and control of electricity. Assist in leading a multidisciplinary team in the selection, procurement, installation, testing, acceptance, operation and maintenance of apparatus, equipment, structures, materials and related systems for Telecommunications systems for support of the generation, transmission, distribution, conversion, measurement and control of electricity. Duties will include preparing preliminary and long-range plans, estimates, budgets, material requirements, specifications, work orders and instructions, cutover instructions and schedules, operating and maintenance instructions, special conditions and agreements, reviews final plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements and coordinates the work of telecommunication contractors, equipment manufacturers, affected public agencies, and utility crews, provides instructions to field crews and answers questions concerning system design issues for crews, contractors, engineers, customers and the public, monitors progress of construction projects, recommend for approval contract change orders and payments, coordinates and reviews the work submitted by consultants and manufacturers on construction, fabrication, installation and modifications of telecommunications systems, prepares progress and final reports and estimates, uses computer based analytical and mathematical tools to optimize system capacity, operations at design capacity and to improve equipment utilization, develops and updates computer analysis programs or tracking systems for appropriate projects, prepares drawings of plans and details manually or with computer-aided drafting and design applications, participates in presentations, special projects and assignments as directed, and performs other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Required qualifications include three years of professional electrical engineering experience, a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional, electrical engineering work.
Desired qualifications include experience in Telecommunications engineering for an electrical utility organization. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with communication electricians, civil, electrical, transmission, distribution and generation engineers, project managers, budget analysts, production and administrative staff, as well as management supervisors, managers and directors. Experience in the design of Microwave, SONET, two-way voice radio or telephone system is strongly desired.
